Bankstown Youth Development Service Inc

A young Aboriginal man from the service worked with a group of young people at Minda Detention Centre to produce a video in one aspect of the project, and the service also worked with another group of students with high truancy rates who were experiencing difficulties at school with literacy and numeracy due to language barriers to develop skills in desktop publishing and internet web design and construction.

Background

Bankstown Youth Development Service Inc is a community based organisation offering local young people from non-English speaking backgrounds the opportunity to participate in educational arts and cultural projects. The multimedia strategic pilot project provided the first opportunity to offer a structured program to teenagers with prior convictions or continual police contact.


Project Objectives

The objectives were to develop educational and training pathways for young people who had either been recently released form detention centres, were on community service orders or were under police notice; introducung these participanrs to video edtiting, script writing, video shooting, and creative writing through the development of a short video; developing multimedia skills using the internet, computer operations, and current popular software; and to improve literacy and basic numeracy through the video production process.
